Brandon honored as Legislator of the Year

RALEIGH, N.C. — Statewide LGBT advocacy group Equality North Carolina announced Tuesday that state Rep. Marcus Brandon (D-Guilford) will be honored as their “Legislator of the Year” at their November gala dinner in Greensboro.

Brandon is the state’s only openly gay or lesbian legislator. The first-term representative made waves in some progressive quarters for his somewhat controversial position on charter schools. But, he received praise as he increasingly became a leading voice against the state’s proposed anti-LGBT constitutional amendment.
In the days leading up to the legislative vote on the amendment, Brandon told qnotes that he was working hard to share his personal story with his colleagues in the state House and Senate.
“I take it very personally,” Brandon said of the amendment. “I’m the only openly gay member of the legislature and there’s definitely a responsibility that comes with that when we’re talking about something so personal.”
Equality North Carolina says Brandon’s advocacy has and will continue to play a key role in state politics.
“We thank you, Representative Brandon, for telling the truth amid all the lies that have been told about LGBT North Carolinians over the past several months, and we look forward to your continuing diplomacy on our behalf as the battle continues against the anti-LGBT amendment,” the group said in an email announcing the award. “We’re confident that in the end, the truth will indeed win out, and you will have played a key role in bringing that about.”
The Equality North Carolina Gala will be held Nov. 12 at Greensboro’s Empire Room after a day-long conference on the campus of the University of North Carolina-Greensboro.
Brandon is a native of Greensboro. His House district covers portions of southwest Greensboro and Guilford County.
