Meeting in Detroit today, members of the Democratic Party’s Platform Committee offered unanimous approval to a plank supporting full marriage rights for same-sex couples.

The plank had been drafted last month in a meeting in Minneapolis. In it, Democrats say they support full marriage rights for same-sex couples and oppose federal and state constitutional amendments barring recognition of LGBT relationships.

Leading marriage equality advocates with Freedom To Marry praised the unanimous vote today, which paves the way for delegate approval at the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte next month.

“Today’s vote to include language supporting the freedom to marry in the Democratic Party’s National Platform is a victory for fairness and families, and a historic moment long in the making,” Freedom to Marry Founder and President Evan Wolfson said in a relase. “Support for the freedom to marry puts the party on the right side of history, and in the solid mainstream of the majority of the American people.”

The new plank is entitled “Freedom to Marry.” It calls for equal protections for same-sex families and supports the repeal of the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act.

Earlier this week, the draft language of the plank was released to BuzzFeed’s Chris Geidner. He also revealed draft language for another plank supporting full workplace protections for LGBT workers and anti-bullying protections for LGBT youth.

The draft marriage plank language released earlier reads: “We support the right of all families to have equal respect, responsibilities, and protections under the law. We support marriage equality and support the movement to secure equal treatment under law for same-sex couples. We also support the freedom of churches and religious entities to decide how to administer marriage as a religious sacrament without government interference. We oppose discriminatory federal and state constitutional amendments and other attempts to deny equal protection of the laws to committed same-sex couples who seek the same respect and responsibilities as other married couples. We support the full repeal of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act and the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act.”
