N.J. LGBT Democrats riding wave of new inclusion

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — This year’s Democratic National Convention saw a significant and historic jump in the total number of LGBT delegates. New Jersey had one of the most significant increases, and Garden State LGBT delegates have been in the middle of the action all week.
Democratic National Committee member Babs Siperstein was among those representing New Jersey this week, as was Sue Fulton, a 1980 West Point graduate and Out Serve board member. For Ann Baker, this week brought two reasons to celebrate. On Thursday, Baker will spend her birthday watching President Barack Obama accept his party’s nomination for president.
Siperstein was on-hand during today’s last LGBT caucus at the convention to introduce Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker, one of the most outspoken marriage equality and LGBT rights advocates in the nation.
New Jersey’s LGBT delegates and Booker were each present early in the week when convention attendees approved an historic platform supporting full marriage rights for same-sex couples.
