Gay N.C. furniture maker to host Democratic gubernatorial candidate
HIGH POINT, N.C. — North Carolina gubernatorial candidate and current Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton is scheduled to hold a fundraiser with leading members of the state’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community this weekend.
Organizers say the event this Sunday, hosted at the High Point home of Taylorsville, N.C., furniture maker Mitchell Gold and his husband Tim Gold, is the first time a candidate for governor has held an event for the LGBT community.
“Most of us know how terrible it is having the Republican anti-LGBT politicians in power in Raleigh,” the fundraiser invite reads. “Putting our rights on the ballot was nothing less than disgraceful.”
In the invite (read the full text below), organizers also said Dalton is “our candidate to be North Carolina‚Äôs next Governor,” calling him a “champion of education” and saying he will create “a solid environment for business and all our people to prosper.”
The invite continues, “Not long ago, few politicians would want to risk being so public in support of LGBT people‚Äôs dignity and equality in our state.”
Tickets to the event cost $250, with other contribution levels at $500 for “friends,” $1,000 for “patrons,” $2,000 for “sponsors” and $4,000 for “hosts.”
Dalton has served as the state’s lieutenant governor since 2009, before which he served as a member of the North Carolina Senate from 2003 to 2009. He faces Republican challenger Pat McCrory, who served 14 years as Charlotte’s mayor.
An NBC News/Marist poll released Thursday and conducted Sept. 23-25 shows McCrory comfortably leading Dalton. Fifty-two percent of respondents said they intend on voting for McCrory, compared with Dalton’s 39 percent.
Dalton included the Greensboro gay-owned business Replacements, Ltd., in a recent campaign tour with Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley.
