Members of the transgender group TransCarolina protested the Human Rights Campaign Carolinas Gala on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009. Members of the group say HRC sold them out when negotiating the Employment Non-Discrimination Act in the fall of 2007.
Q-Notes Editor Matt Comer spoke to TransCarolina’s Janice Covington and the Charlotte Gender Alliance’s Pamela Jones at the Westin Hotel about their thoughts of HRC, their protest and transgender inclusion.
I no longer support HRC because they did sell out the transgender community.
HRC claims that they are “…the largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans…”
Their Mission Statement reads: “HRC envisions an America where lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are ensured equality and embraced as full members of the American family at home, at work and in every community.”
How can you make these statements when you are willing to publicly abandon one of the groups you claim to support?
ENDA without transgender protection? No thank you.
If HRC is no longer willing stand up for our transgender brothers and sisters then WE must!
Contact your representatives in Washington and ask them to support an ENDA that includes everyone.
