GREENSBORO, N.C. — The former manager of the Biltmore Greensboro Hotel and a former officer on the board of directors of Alternative Resources of the Triad/OutGreensboro.com, was charged Tuesday with one count of embezzling state sales tax and one count of embezzling Guilford County sales tax.
John Worth Johnson, 38, formerly of 111 W. Washington Street, was originally arrested last week by Myrtle Beach police. He was extradited back to North Carolina. He is currently being held on a $100,000 bond by Wake County Police.
According to arrest warrants obtained by The News and Record, Johnson is alleged to have aided Worth, Inc. to embezzle state and county sales tax totaling $48,584.93. The embezzlement occurred from Jan. 1, 2004 through July 31, 2007. Worth, Inc. was the managing company through which Johnson managed the hotel business, where he also resided.
As a long-time officer on the Alternative Resources of the Triad board of directors, Johnson was at times responsible for keeping track of the organization’s finances. At least once, Johnson used his own financial resources to shore up organizational investments or for temporary loans. Johnson also donated extensive time, services and accommodations at the Biltmore Greensboro Hotel for organization events. At this time, there is no reported evidence Johnson’s alleged criminal activities involved the organization in any way.
