RALEIGH, N.C. — The founding staff attorneys at Charlotte’s Freedom Center for Social Justice’s LGBTQ Law Center are doing well after a minor automobile accident on Thursday.
Attorneys Kelly Durden and Sarah Demarest suffered no major injuries, but were examined at a hospital in the Raleigh area and released around 8:30 p.m.
Demarest told qnotes that a baby deer had run into the highway, causing several cars to swerve to avoid it. A large truck then rear-ended Demarest’s and Durden’s car.
The two were scheduled to lead a “Know Your Rights” workshop hosted by Equality North Carolina on Thursday evening. That event was canceled due to the accident.
“We just learned that our friends from the Freedom Center for Social Justice LGBTQ Law Center, who were hosting a FREE law clinic at our offices tonight, have been in an auto accident,” Equality NC’s Jen Jones wrote in a Facebook post. “After a few bumps and bruises, the team has reluctantly cancelled tonight’s event. Please keep this amazing team in your thoughts and show them some love right here!”
