WILMINGTON, N.C. — Cape Fear Community College has announced it’s added 12 new gender-neutral restrooms to its campuses in an effort, they said, to conform to new anti-discrimination measures.
“We added these facilities to make sure we’re complying with federal regulations so we’re not discriminating with people that have gender identities either male or female,” CFCC Director of Marketing and Public Relations David Hardin explained to news station WECT.
The new restrooms can be used by any gender and the college still retains traditional sex-segregated restrooms.
The gender-neutral restrooms are smaller and private, akin to family restrooms.
In Charlotte, Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) came under fire earlier this spring for alleged harassment and discrimination of a transgender student as she exited a restroom. Unlike Cape Fear, the college has maintained they are not breaking federal anti-discrimination regulations on gender.
After the controversy, CPCC publicized the location of eight gender-neutral/family restrooms. The eight locations are spread across CPCC’s Central Campus, the WTVI PBS offices and the Merancas Campus.
A non-discrimination policy including sexual orientation and gender identity could not be found in Cape Fear’s catalog or other policy listings online.
CPCC has yet to add sexual orientation or gender identity to its own non-discrimination policies.
