Unfortunately, the entire staff has to suffer the consequences of their actions.Diaz and Black must pay for their actions. Such selfish and greedy people have no place in the not for profit healthcare system.

The closure of MAP brings along a lot of sadness for those passionate to promote such a noble endeavor.

It is frustrating to witness this happening and looks like greedy executives like Black and Diaz are solely responsible for this situation. Does anyone remember the late 1980’s when several hundred thousand dollars was stolen by the CFO? Has anyone ever heard one of their clients or former employees say anything nice about that agency? Sure, it is a great idea that it exists. But anyone who has ever received services there will tell you that it was one screwed up organization. Charlotte’s HIV positive community will be much better served if people stop fighting the demise of MAP. Let them close the doors and walk away.

MAP has been a screwed up agency since it began. To clarify and address your concerns: Rescare has been providing services to PWA's for over 13 years. Our main book of business is home care, which is a national franchise, but I can assure you that our case management services are of the highest quality available, bar none. Please note that while RAIN has been an entity for many years, they have only been providing case management services for a little over a year. I simply mean to insure that consumers are aware of ALL their options for services as they transition. This is not a one-size-fits-all scenario.

Mark:<br

I was a MAP staffer for 6 years back in the early nineties and am devastated by the news of their demise. It is a shame that a city of this size will not have an ASO.
Pragmatically speaking; however, MAP clients deserve to know they will not be abandoned when the doors shut.

A non profit the size of MAP that paid it’s director 90k, is a business.Besides, at the end of the day, clients who need doctor appts., housing assistance, food bank referrals and help with unpaid utilities don’t give a damn what the name of the “business” is.<br

They can and will offer services to any MAP client displaced by their closeure.

I would like to point out that there are a number of organizations in Mecklenburg County that continue to provide HIV case management. A word of advice for future organizations requesting tax free status and donations from the community...be as transparent as you can, be open and let the world see how you operate. Address problems and be fare in practices. This is where MAP failed from the beginning of this mess. They lost site of the original mission and greed and bad judgment clouded the way and now here we are standing in the ruble of a once great foundation. Shame on those individuals, and you know who you are, for creating such a travesty. I am disgusted at the board for allowing this to progress to the point that it has.
Thank you Q-Notes and Matt for helping to clarify some of this confusion and bringing this story to the forefront and thank you to the hard working souls who over the years had only good intentions working for this organization and let us all hope that the people most affected by this closing will be able to find a new path of hope and assistance. Let us not forget.

It is indeed a sad day for such a wonderful organization. There will be many who did rely on their services and left scrambling for assistance. It is also a hopeful day for Charlotte as in this economy, I think it is important that limited pool of money that exists from Federal, state, and local aid as well donations can now be better directed to the Regional HIV/AIDS Consortium and RAIN who are working hard to serve the region's clients. Finally - please beware the above poster obdobe.Anyone who promotes an alternative view of HIV and AIDS as anything but a virus that can only be treated with medications is promoting risky and life endangering treatments for those who have the Virus. For a list of those who died as a result of denying the virus while seeking an alternative cure, please see the AIDStruth website.

I agree with some of the other individuals posts, there are certainly some answers that need to be provided regarding Jose Diaz, but the community needs to look at the prior managment and the prior Board(s). It is true that this iteration of the Board came into existence in the last 4-5 months, but it was comprised of a group of individuals desperately trying to find a way to save MAP. The prior executive management, Oltz and the prior Boards ran this agency into the ground.

This is a sad day for the Charlotte community as a crucial resource is now gone. The people hurt the most in this scenario are those that are living with HIV/AIDS. Dishonest and unethical people have gained financial profits at the expense of individuals lives and well-being. The funding is in place to serve the needs of clients and the over compensation of the executives results in fewer services for the end users. It is my prayer that the community stakeholders come together and address these problems and find a way to make sure that funding and services continue for the growing number of HIV infected folks in our community. We must put egos, negative attitudes and opinions to the side and focus on coming up with a plan to fix the problem that has been created by the mismanagement of MAP. It's a fairly simple process especially when there are degrees/licenses involved. What is wrong with Boards of non-profits lately? Not just at MAP but other organizations too. I am not naming any names but I will say that there are organizations (mostly LGBT) that will not see another rainbow cent of my hard earned money until their respective Boards and/or leadership make some significant changes.Non-Profit organizations should have transparent financial records - period. Board meetings should never be closed to the public. All minutes should be available to the public - unredacted. Board chairs should NEVER be allowed to make unilateral decisions without concensus. Boards should have and follow by-laws; those by-laws should be readily available to the public. As contributors we are, in a sense, "stockholders" and should DEMAND these things from organizations we support. Stockholders of corporations can hold meetings and vote out bad leadership - as supporters perhaps we should mobilize our outrage and do the same thing. As stockholders we should demand that we, not the sitting Board (or chair,) should approve new additions to Boards and we should elect the chair. I believe that if these changes (and others)were to happen, Boards would be more responsible and bad leaders (or leaders who serve merely to feed their ego or fill some other emotional void) would be less common. As painful and embarassing as stories about problems in MAP and other organizations are, I applaud Q-Notes for their reporting. Without their efforts these matters would likely never see the light of day.

I just don’t understand why organizations (school boards, governments, corporations, etc.) fail to thoroughly check the background of applicants/appointees. Boards should have and follow by-laws; those by-laws should be readily available to the public.

As contributors we are, in a sense, “stockholders” and should DEMAND these things from organizations we support. Stockholders of corporations can hold meetings and vote out bad leadership – as supporters perhaps we should mobilize our outrage and do the same thing.

By: Rosie

<guid

This article fails to mention that current Board Chair Shawn McMaster has only a few months on the board. Former Board Chair Oltiz should not be talking at all as I am sure he signed a confidentiality contract when he left, so I am sure he will be needing a lawyer, not to mention all his misappropriations. How sad that unethical people and their lies and selfish acts took this agency down. A sad day for Maps and the people it serves...or served

This just gets worse and worse, this agency is undoubtedly finished. What a huge loss. Although I am not suprised that these lude acts were taking place at MAP, Robert "Bob" Oltz can't be trusted and is guilty of some of the same acts that he is accusing the current leadership of.It is my recommendation that the BOD replace all of their leadership and allow the culture of the organization to reinvent itself. There is a great need for the organization in the community, but there is a need to have ethical leadership making decisions for the group.

This is an interesting story.
