Thousands of years might separate ancient Rome and Greece from modern-day Charlotte, but don’t tell that to the organizers of tonight’s “Delirium: Festival of Dionysus.”

Kicking off at 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8 at NoDa’s Dammit Janet nightclub, the Goth, Industrial, Rave and Fetish party is bound to please the ancient Dionysus, god of sex and festivity, wine and intoxication. (And, lest we forget, we should mention Dionysus’ teeny bit of gayness — just imagine yourself constantly surrounded by youthful satyrs with perpetual erections. ‘Nuf said.)

Those folks familiar with Single Cell’s “Purgatory” might enjoy this event, but organizer Zac Morris says their production company’s event will have a slightly different focus and feel.

“We’re working with a lot of the local lifestyle groups, reminding people that this is more than just the scene. There is actually a lifestyle there,” Morris says. “We’re bringing in both demonstrators and performers who are experienced and been in the lifestyle for a long time. They’ll be talking to people, teaching people what it means to be in the lifestyle as opposed to the scene. We’re trying to get people to realize it is about fun and creativity and not quite so much about how you look.”
