MeckPAC statement on Prop 8 decision
Updated: August 5, 2010 at 5:22 pm
Charlotte’s Mecklenburg Gay and Lesbian Political Action Committee released the following statement this evening following today’s decision on Proposition 8:
MeckPAC applauds Chief US District Judge Vaughn Walker of San Francisco for the courageous enforcement of the U.S. Constitutional guarantees of Equal Protection and Due Process. The Supreme Court of the United States has repeatedly held for more than a century that marriage is one of our most important personal relationships and is therefore a fundamental civil right.
The U.S. Constitution means something; its purpose is to protect all citizens, not only from tyranny by government, but also from the tyranny of other citizens. The Constitution exists to protect all citizens, whose rights should not be subject to the whims of current public opinion. We are pleased Judge Walker has upheld these cherished and important ideals as they are essential to American freedom. Finally, we hope that equality in marriage for same-sex couples might some day become a reality for all Americans, including North Carolinians.
