WINSTON-SALEM — The organizer of the Obama Pride North Carolina LGBT Get out the vote (GOTV) efforts said Tuesday that a statewide voter outreach effort held Oct. 17-19 reached as many as 1,500 people.

Chair of Obama Pride North Carolina, Wade Boyles, the Democratic candidate for the 74th N.C. House seat in Winston-Salem, said the group worked in areas starting in Chapel Hill and Raleigh and as far west as Asheville and Hickory.

The voter outreach team kicked off their efforts in Chapel Hill and Raleigh on Friday, after which they headed to Winston-Salem. Boyles said the group was unable to do any door-to-door canvassing due to the weather.

The team visited gay nightclubs in Winston-Salem, Asheville and Hickory.

“In all over the weekend the team estimates it knocked on 100 doors, spoke to around 1500 people and made approximately 100 phone calls,” Boyles said in an email. “We are happy with the response we received from the LGBT community during the tour. We are very grateful to those who opened their homes for us and provided food and other items.”

The tour will continue next weekend.
