Retirement and gated LGBT communities
As LGBT baby-boomers begin to reach retirement age many are seeking the comfort of secure living

Since the 1970s gated communities across the country have offered individuals and families a sense of security and communal living. Beginning in the late ’90s we’ve seen the development of such facilities for gays and lesbians. Since that time, they’ve popped up all around the country.

Here’s a list of some of the options currently available.

A residential community in Pecos, N.M., open to anyone who wishes to live harmoniously in a lesbian and gay community designed for active adults. This gated resort community rests on 140 acres of forested land and includes outstanding natural beauty and magnificent views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in sunny northern New Mexico.

A mountain retirement community for gays and lesbians near Boone, N.C., Carefree Cove is set in 165 acres of wooded land in the North Carolina mountains. Currently there are 90 lots on 100 acres of property. The remaining 65 acres are used for recreation, like fishing and hiking. A 3,400-square-foot lodge is planned as the center of the community. The lodge will have a fireplace, indoor pool, hot tubs and meeting space.

Fountaingrove Lodge is a development by Aegis Senior Living, a recognized leader in the retirement housing industry. In addition to a 148-unit continuing care retirement community for LGBT older adults, it will include a 36-unit facility offering assisted living and Alzheimer’s care. The development is slated to be ready for occupancy by the winter of 2007-08.

Paradise One, in Easthampton, Mass., will be New England’s first age-in-place community for LGBT individuals, couples and families. A development of approximately 70 living units with facilities for events, guest accommodations, concierge services and innovative high-tech features. The units are anticipated to be ready for occupancy in the fall of 2007.

Hidden in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains near Asheville, N.C. On a 100-acre site, each lot will be five acres with as much nature as possible surrounding the homes. Purchasers of the lots can build whatever type house they want, but developers are hoping for brick or log cabin type homes.

Venus Acres is in Highlands County, Fla. Centrally located, it is a short drive from both East and West coasts. It is rural, the roads are shell rock and one can hear cows, see horses and live with agricultural zoning, and few restrictions. Manufactured homes of many sizes dot the one-acre parcels, with some sitebuilt ones. The 180 lots are about 30 percent gay-owned, and that is changing fast as word gets out.
