Friends finale approaching
HICKORY, N.C. — AIDS Leadership Foothills-area Alliance (ALFA) has announced that its Dining for Friends finale will be held on Sept. 17.
The Finale features hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, dancing to music by DJ Rick, entertainment, silent auction and more. Silent auction items include jewelry, vacation packages, salon treatments, art, etc.
Individual tickets to this event can be purchased through ALFA for $25 or at the door. Individuals may purchase tickets in advance by contacting ALFA at 828-322-1447, ext. 222.
Queer classes announced
FLAT ROCK, N.C. — “History of Gays in the Military” will be presented at the Blue Ridge Center for Lifelong Learning, Blue Ridge Community College, Patton Building, Room 150, off I-26, exit 53, on Oct. 13 and 20, 1-3 p.m.
The center says: “Many people do not realize that there were prominent figures in the military who were gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender since the beginning of recorded history (2284 B.C.E.). This course is a cross-cultural history including Egyptian, Judeo-Christian, Chinese, Greek, Roman, Muslim, Japanese, English, French, and Native American references from the American Revolution, the War Between the States, World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam War, concluding with our present time. The people include Alexander the Great, Richard the Lion-Hearted, and Jose M. Zunia, US Soldier of the Year.”
Retired psychiatrist Dr. Clay Eddleman will be the presenter. He worked with the Veterans Administration for 30 years and currently serves as professor emeritus at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.
Center membership is required for class participation. Tuition is $15.
