Luncheon to feature grant recipient awards

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Gloria Steinem, activist and author, will be the featured speaker at the sold out Community Foundation of Western North Carolina Power of the Purse on May 21 at noon at the Expo Center, Crown Plaza Resort, 1 Resort Dr.

The event celebrates the power of women’s philanthropy in Western North Carolina, the Foundation said.

Steinem is best known as a co-founder and editor of Ms. Magazine, which was a must-read in the 1970s bra-burning era. She is considered to be one of the most “important voices of the modern feminist movement.”

Prior to the luncheon, a by-invitation-only coffee for patrons and sponsors will be held with Steinem. After lunch, grant recipients will receive their 2012 grants.

Proceeds from the event will benefit The Women’s Fund, a permanent endowment at The Community Foundation that supports the needs of women and girls in the Western region.
