ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays Rocky Mount recently awarded its first Straight for Equality Award to Al LaRose, who is a longtime member of the local organization.
The award will be presented annually by the chapter to someone in the area who has supported LGBT equality, according to the Rocky Mount Telegram.
LaRose has been active in the chapter’s educational programs and fundraising efforts. He has also helped with the group’s advocacy efforts. LaRose serves as a member of the local PFLAG chapter’s board of directors, where he volunteers as board secretary and is responsible for providing resource materials for the chapter’s monthly meetings.
“Al has been a key player in our mission of support, education and advocacy,” chapter President Susan Ayers told the Telegram. “He’s a strong, straight voice for equality.”
LaRose is Professor Emeritus at N.C. Wesleyan College and served as director of the school’s library from 1989 until he retired in 1997.

Does your organization or special interest group have events or great information to share with our readers? If so, be sure to send in your information to email@example.com. In the upcoming months, we’ll feature one of you in our news notes section in each issue. Are you a part of a Meetup, Yahoo or Google group and do you do something that’s really newsworthy? Do you provide a service for the community or hold fundraisers for worthy causes? Do you educate the public about LGBT issues or concerns? Of course, this is only a sampling of things we are interested in. It’s the aim of these pieces to inform, enlighten and educate our readers about what we’re doing here in the Carolinas to champion LGBT rights, as well as offer resources for those who may be interested in what your group is doing.
