Mecklenburg LGBT Dems appoint new leader

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The LGBT Democrats of Mecklenburg County have appointed a new leader following the resignation of their former chair. Cameron Joyce has taken the reins of the group following the resignation of Gary Leake this weekend.

Leake cited his schedule as his reason for stepping down, though said he would remain active with the group and other Democratic Party initiatives. Leake was the local caucus’ first chair, seeing the organization through its chartering process and the adoption of its bylaws.

Joyce, 24, had been serving as secretary of the group, a local caucus of the statewide LGBT Democrats of North Carolina. He is a graduate student at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, finishing his master’s degree in public administration.

Joyce volunteered as an on-campus coordinator with President Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign. He also served as an intern with former Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx during the 2012 Democratic National Convention. Last year, he served as a member of City Councilmember LaWana Mayfield’s campaign team.

“I gladly take this opportunity to continue to build the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Democrats of Mecklenburg County,” Joyce said in a press release. “I am eager to grow the political participation of LGBT people in the county and advocate for our population as a member of the county executive council of the Mecklenburg County Democratic Party. I urge all LGBT people in Mecklenburg County to recognize the influence of a united voice and the power in your vote as we work together to identify and elect LGBT and Ally representatives for office in every level of government.”

The process to fill Joyce’s former position as secretary will begin at the group’s next meeting. A meeting date, time and location will be announced on the group’s Facebook page.

Joyce’s story growing up in a conservative family and small town was the focus of a feature published jointly by qnotes and Creative Loafing this spring.

  1. I’m sorry but regardless of sexuality no one should align themselves with either one of the two major parties. They represent Wall Street first and foremost while throwing crumbs to minorities to keep them placated and donating to their campaigns. This fall, fire them all; re-elect no one. We could not possibly do worse.
