More states are actively discussing the issue of marriage equality for same-sex couples. It is a heated topic, with debates and election referendums pitching community members and neighbors against each other. With all the national discussion on the subject, where does the issue stand in the Carolinas?

On Oct. 22, N.C. State University held a forum on marriage equality, sponsored by the campus’ GLBT Student Center and the Union Diversity Activities Bard. With about 50 in attendance, panelists at the forum included Kate Kendall, executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights; Ian Palmquist, executive director of Equality North Carolina; Tracy Hollister, public policy researcher for “Equal Hearts;” and Rev. Jimmy Creech, a former United Methodist pastor.
