Constituent rally on SCOTUS appointee slated for March 21

Senators urged to ‘do your job’

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Local constituents will assemble outside the offices of Sen. Thom Tillis on March 21, 12:30 p.m., at 9300 Harris Corners Pkwy., to urge both Sen. Tillis and Sen. Richard Burr to uphold their constitutional obligation to consider a presidential appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court.

doyourjob_tillisAt the “Do Your Job!” rally, attendees will remind the senators of Article II, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution, which describes the power of the president and the role of the Senate in judicial appointments.

Additionally, constituents will share with Sen. Tillis how they perform their job — for example, as a teacher, nurse, or business owner — and ask why Sen. Tillis is refusing to do his job as outlined in the Constitution.

“Sen. Tillis, your constituents in North Carolina are here today asking you to #DoYourJob and consider a qualified nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court,” said Margie Storch, host for the event. “There’s too much at stake, and refusing your constitutional duties for political theater won’t fly with voters in North Carolina.”

More than two dozen groups are coordinating the national day of action, with thousands of constituents from organizations including MoveOn.org Civic Action, Charlotte National Organization for Women, Credo Action, the Progressive Campaign Change Committee, and other progressive groups.

The Republican Party’s senators are attempting to block President Barack Obama’s appointment of Merrick B. Garland to the Supreme Court bench. They say they will not consider the appointment as part of a Senate hearing and confirmation process, adding that they feel that the people should have a say on who will fill the vacant seat left with the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. The Democrats, however, are in full push mode to force the hearings.
