Regional: Survey depicts discrimination issues

Beyond the Carolinas

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Center for Transgender Equality has announced that they have released its North Carolina state-specific data from the “2015 U.S. Transgender Survey.”

In the report, evidence showed that in the year before the survey, 62 percent of transgender North Carolinians avoided using public restrooms because they were afraid of confrontations and mistreatment. Information was collected before HB2 became law and the organization said that the situation was “likely even worse now.”

The survey provided statistics one can use on employment, poverty, school mistreatment, police mistreatment, discrimination in health care and more.

Now, the center calls for the community to demand their legislators repeal HB2 and support LGBTQ non-discrimination protections now.
