Sherry Vine to go Gaga at Closet

There’s simply no disputing it — Lady Gaga is the star around which the current musical galaxy rotates. At this very moment people around the world are listening to her songs, watching her videos, dancing to her remixes, discussing her costumes, debating her artistic merits and prognosticating about her future.

When a performer reaches this level of success they are ripe for mimicry, homage and parody. Other entertainers can even boost their own careers by tweaking the noses of such superstars. For example, New York-based drag performer Sherry Vine became an internet sensation this spring with her scatalogical parody of Gaga’s smash “Bad Romance” called “Sh*t My Pants.” The latter song and its accompanying video are a crass, side-splitting ode to inopportune intestinal distress. Just the kind of thing that sets the blogosphere on fire.

Vine has been working successfully in the Big Apple as a comedian, singer and actor for years, regularly creating parodies to tracks from Madonna, Britney and others. However, it has been the white-hot buzz from her Gaga parodies (which includes a follow-up riff on “Telephone” called “Make Me Moan”) that has lifted her career to another level. As a result, Vine has become a hot commodity on the gay club circuit.

On Friday, June 18, she is booked for an eagerly anticipated appearance at Closet nightclub in Charlotte. According to bar management, Vine will perform live versions of her best pop parodies and deliver select bits from her comedy routines. A capacity crowd is expected to turn out for the show, which will be hosted by local camp drag favorite Buff Faye.

$10 advance tickets can be purchased at the club, or by phone at 704-375-1777. Doors open at 8 p.m. Closet nightclub is located at 1202 Charlottetown Ave.
