Community members in Hickory and its surrounding areas are banding together to present Catawba Valley pride, Oct. 15-17.
On Monday, an initial meeting was held to discuss the idea, with representatives from area LGBT organizations, businesses, Lenior-Rhyne University and others. According to Ed Farthing, a Hickory resident who attended the meeting, the group came to consensus on the event’s dates, initial activities and other needs.
Farthing wrote to qnotes:
There was a meeting this past Monday evening to sort of measure interest and a large crowd of folks showed up and several decisions were made – the 1st being to hold a Pride Event in October and to make sure it was more than just a Hickory event. Thus the name of Catawba Valley Pride was chosen to encourage folks from Marion to Statesville (at least) to attend, and there is also interest from the folks who hold High Country Pride in Boone as well as Asheville and Charlotte Pride folks. Of course attendance is not limited and a whole block of hotel rooms has been set aside along with the ballroom of a local hotel for our use. We also developed a theme and it is We Speak Pride. We have a logo and t-shirts and other goodies will be available soon!!!
We are looking for folks who want to help, whether it be a major role like helping to co-chair the committee (a gay man, a lesbian, a trans guy or gal, and/or a heterosexual guy or gal would all be of help in that role), chairing one of the sub committees referred to in the minutes below, or someone who wants to do a specific thing and nothing else, like set up the web site, set up a social page, incorporate the organization, help with security on one of the days of the event, be a speaker at one of the seminars on Friday and LRU, sponsor a BINGO game that Friday night, and so forth.
Those interested in volunteering to assist planning for the event can contact David Zealy at email@example.com.
