Operation Save America, the national Concord, N.C.-based anti-LGBT and anti-choice street-preaching protest group, is bringing their national, annual gathering to Charlotte July 17-24.

According to their website, their “The King is Coming to the Queen City” event will “storm the gates of hell” in Charlotte with protests and rallies at abortion clinics and churches.

In response, local Planned Parenthood organizers will hold two defense training sessions in the week prior to Operation Save America’s visit. According to the group, the defense sessions will “educate advocates on how to protect patients and staff at the major family planning health centers in the Charlotte area.”

The first session is scheduled for July 10, 10:30 a.m.-noon, at Morrison Regional Library Auditorium, 7015 Morrison Blvd. The second will be held July 15, 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte Student Union Multipurpose Room, 9201 University City Blvd.

Planned Parenthood will also be holding a Pro-Choice Block Party on Tuesday, July 13, 6 p.m. The Common Market-South End, 1515 S. Tryon St.

As of yet, no LGBT organizations in Charlotte have announced education, protest or other counter-events.

Led by the Rev. Flip Benham, Operation Save America has made itself known for its vocal and often confrontational protests and street preaching at reproductive health clinics and LGBT Pride events across the country and particularly in North Carolina.

  1. Guess they thought they’d be able to protest at Pride at the same time…NOT

That’s the only positive thing I can say about Pride being moved to October.

  2. Good news. It is nice to see that the most important principle of this country, free speech, is alive and well. LGBT and pro-abortion rallies always take the top spot in the news as to strengthen their agenda. Nobody needs to “defend” themselves against free speech. If they want to kill their baby, nobody is going to stop them. But society doesn’t have to accept it as a whole. There will always be differing opinions, and those who can not deal with that fact should re-evaluate their choice of residence.

  3. Free speech is one thing, but these protests have turned violent in the past. Many of these women (most, I would wager), are going to Planned Parenthood for routine pap smears and other non-abortion services. Would you want to be harassed by a protest of alternative medicine advocates on your way in to see your doctor for a routine checkup?

  4. Rob – No one is “pro-abortion”. Yes, women should have the legal right for access and the choice if the need arises but pro-choice people are in general very much in favor of services to help prevent abortion by educating the masses in regards to birth control and safe sex practices. Planned Parenthood PREVENTS more abortions then any anti-choice group could ever hope to.
A Fox – Planned Parenthood in Charlotte does not currently offer abortion services.

  5. NARAL Pro-Choice NC took the lead in organizing and hosting the Pro-Choice Block Party. It was co-hosted by NOW, the Feminist Majority, as well as Planned Parenthood. We had over 40 people attend, and it was a great success!

  6. Abortion is the killing of little baby boys and girls. America’a holycoust! Your rights end were someone elses nose starts. It’s called Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
