Observer: Marriage equality is ‘a basic question of equality’

The Charlotte Observer‘s lead editorial on Sunday, Aug. 8 addressed the landmark federal ruling on Proposition 8.

On Aug. 4, U.S. District Court Chief Judge Vaughn Walker struck down the anti-gay ballot initiative, citing Due Process and Equal Protection guarantees as he condemned the California state constitutional amendment as unconstitutional.

The Observer writes:

At its core, this is a basic question of equality. Equal protection under the law is a treasured American tenet. Until gay citizens are afforded the same rights as heterosexual ones, our nation will fail to live up to that lofty but simple goal.
