S.C. Couple to Get Day in Court

A U.S. District Court has denied an effort by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the state of South Carolina to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Lambda Legal, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the ACLU of South Carolina and South Carolina Equality on behalf of a married lesbian couple, Eden Rogers and Brandy Welch.

Lambda Legal released the third edition of their annual report of judicial nominees revealing the extent to which the Trump-Pence administration, with the help of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, has filled the federal judiciary with an “unprecedented number of unqualified, extremist judges whose records reveal deep hostility for the rights of LGBT people, women, immigrants and other vulnerable populations,” the organization said.

The U.S. Supreme Court vacated a lower court ruling and chose not to hear the case brought to it by Gavin Grimm and the City Council of the City of West Hollywood-approved an item that directs City of West Hollywood staff to take steps in prohibiting West Hollywood City Hall from doing business with entities that provide financial or other benefits to the President of the United States or his revocable trust.
