My entire focus has shifted to the first week of November. In the first days of the 11th month of 2020, two monumental things happen for the HIV community in our state. On Nov. 1, open enrollment begins, and over the subsequent 45 days, anyone can purchase health insurance through the marketplace.

We cannot overlook COVID-19’s negative impacts. Disparities in access to medical care are more visible now, and the need for policies to ensure equitable access to healthcare and treatment are required. Compensation of essential workers, especially in healthcare, is inadequate and must be addressed.

Expanding Medicaid has been on the HIV advocacy agenda for several years. Now that North Carolinians are living with the impact of a global pandemic, the need for action on access to care is critical.
