Rev. William Barber steps down as NC NAACP leader

Barber will transition to leadership of the New Poor People's Campaign

A longtime leader of the progressive movement, Rev. Dr. William J. Barber of the NAACP of North Carolina will step down as leader of the state’s chapter to focus on a revival of Dr. King’s 1967-8 Poor People’s Campaign. The New Poor People’s Campaign under Rev. Barber will renew the spirit of “moral movement” and activism.

Although the notorious House Bill 2 (HB2) is repealed, legal discrimination against LGBTQ North Carolinians continues. Under the House Bill 142 (HB142) “compromise” legislation, signed into law by Gov. Roy Cooper on March 30, much of HB2 remains.
