This year’s incarnation of the annual Day of Advocacy organized by Equality NC will enliven the North Carolina General Assembly this Feb. 22. Activists both LGBTQ and ally will join together to demand the repeal of House Bill 2 (HB2) and to fight for state-wide non-discrimination protections that include sexual orientation and gender identity.
Two bills have been introduced, one in each house of the North Carolina legislature, aiming to fully repeal House Bill 2 (HB2) and replace it with non-discrimination protections including sexual orientation and gender identity. In a legislature that has staunchly refused to repeal the transphobic law, sponsors of the repeal bills know that passing the new legislation may prove a serious challenge.
Amid numerous controversial cabinet picks, another has arisen that may give LGBTQ advocates pause. John Gore, known recently as the legal defense counsel for the University of North Carolina fighting claims of discrimination against transgender individuals, was named to head the DOJ’s Civil Rights division.
